March already

Well somehow it has become March ! So much has happened so far this year – In February I did two tramps in the South Island (Kepler and Routeburn), Nick and Phiny have visited from the states and left again for another year. I spent some days at the beach at both Waihi and Orewa. Taekwon-do has started up again and I have been on the regional camp and performed with the demo team at the relay for life.

Me Breaking a board at the demo

Grading for the next belt is coming up very shortly too (April 4th) and we have another demo this weekend at Bunnings.

Green belt – yah!

Well grading for my green belt in Taekwon-do was on Saturday 6th December and to my complete astonishment I received an A pass (my third in succession). Everyone else who graded from our club passed with Zac getting double graded to Yellow belt too :) There is only 2 trainings left for the year now- so I will miss it quite a lot I think… especially when I am in the states freezing for xmas and new years.

Its starting to feel like christmas now with all the decorations being up everywhere – I do like this time of the year , and it is certainly getting warmer too :) Although from today you wouldn’t know it – (its currently raining)

I have the Billy Joel concert on this sunday so that should be pretty cool. Third concert at Vector arena this time in the rafters! :) but should be fun – after being literally at the front row for Def Leppard and not too badly placed at Rihanna it will be interesting to see the sound difference

ITFNZ National Tournament 2008

Well the tournament is over – I can report I had a great time and Midlands did very well in winning a ton of medals. I think the ID cards worked very well (which was cool) cause I had spent a lot of time getting them to look right. I got to meet two of the Masters as well as many other senior belts (very inspiring) – it was a great event to be involved in and probably my highlight was watching the Male Black belt team events especially the  epic sparring final with Auckland North which went to 6 rounds and we only lost narrowly- and of course hanging out with the other Midlands competitors, crew and supporters.

Next up in my TKD calendar is grading on November 29th for 6th gup (green belt) so hopefully I will be ready for that ;)

7th Gup Grading

Last weekend I graded for my green stripe (and yes I did pass!). It would seem I am getting over my fear of standing in front of crowds of people. I was not as nervous as the last grading, (which I ended up nearly hyper ventilating and screwed up my chon ji pattern)

I think in part because I had been practicing so much and was confident of my patterns and theory. And in part because we have had some very good hard  training sessions leading up to the grading that I felt I could handle whatever was thrown at me.

I have also got very involved with the National champs and have met some great people at higher belt levels which changed my perception from “having to be super-human” to have a black belt to just having to put in a lot of work and trying your best.

I think most people who start martial arts, especially when older, doubt their own ability to acheive the level of skill they can see from black belts in the club.  Even more so I think people have the impression before they start that they are too uncoordianted (because of previous experiences with totally unrelated things like dancing). Sure it is hard work, but no harder than getting up and going to work or to Uni or to school and trying your best. Results do come. I look forward now until the end of November when hopefully I will be ready to grade for green belt.

In the mean time I have taken on the role of the Midlands region team manager for the National champs which are coming up Oct 4th-5th in Tauranga. I am enjoying the ability to help out especially with the web side of the things.

Only a couple of days now until we fly out for Australia and Craigs wedding. It will be good to get into some warmer weather.

Also not long until all the american tv shows start again for the fall season …

Taekwon-do quiz

I had a bit of free time so I converted a java quiz into a web accessible quiz for the Hamilton Taekwon-do Site- it will be very useful in learning korean and english Taekwon-do terms. I have some more ideas for it including creating a full quiz , storing high scores and names of competitors and time-limit questions – this will be project for when I get some more free time ;)
