March already

Well somehow it has become March ! So much has happened so far this year – In February I did two tramps in the South Island (Kepler and Routeburn), Nick and Phiny have visited from the states and left again for another year. I spent some days at the beach at both Waihi and Orewa. Taekwon-do has started up again and I have been on the regional camp and performed with the demo team at the relay for life.

Me Breaking a board at the demo

Grading for the next belt is coming up very shortly too (April 4th) and we have another demo this weekend at Bunnings.

Post number 100- and New Years Eve 2008

Nick and Phiny travelled over from Philly on Dec 31st to party like it was 1999 in New York – and O yes we did party. They were staying a few blocks from Times Sq in the Sheraton New York, a short subway ride on the number 1 train to 50th st. It was a particularly cold day with snow flurries. We headed downtown to some bars in the village, and started with some food at a Noodle place – followed by our first couple of drinks at a sports bar including an irish car bomb (baileys shot in Guiness) which Phiny introduced me too when I was in Philly with them, followed by some more drinks at another bar which brewed its own beer , then to a bar that supplied some breads, cheese and dips (turned out to be the only food we ate for rest of night)

The village area of the city wasn’t terribly busy compared to the madness of Times Sq and the ball drop. We were lucky to get a table at another bar which was our final stop for the night, the bar had some lucky waitresses who received some shots courtesey of Nick. We were there at the countdown and by this time I was pretty drunk- many of what happened after that was a blur – but I do remember heading back to the Sheraton with Nick & Phiny sometime around 3am – and ended up crashin with them.

The first day of 2009 for me started off pretty hungover ;) It was a good night I had a great time.

USA trip- 26-29 dec -Philidelphia trip

During my time in Philly I stayed with Nick and Phiny, and it was cool – visited the stairs of the Art Museum where Rocky ran up during his training montage ;) Had a classic philly cheesesteak (wit onions)

I was still feeling queesy from the food poisoning the whole time so didn’t really eat much.

USA day 10 – Christmas in New York

For Christmas day we headed to an Irish Restaurant for a 3 course meal. The surroundings were very cool and by the looks of the photos on the wall – the owner was well known to many celebrities and Politicians. The place was very busy with many australians and other tourists having christmas lunch there.

It didn’t snow on Christmas day – but it was still cold. For dinner that night we had chinese at a cheap place near the hotel. I’m not sure if it was the chinese or any food earlier or even if it was the food but the next morning I was very sick.

I must admit it didn’t feel very christmasy being in a strange country with cold weather, and even a whole lot of shops being open and a ton of people just acting like it was an normal day.

Usa day 9 – Christmas eve in New York

Today we had brunch at the Manhattan Diner for the second time on this trip- this time though I had the cobb salad which had grilled chicken and avocado, bacon and cucumber. At least I made the attempt at something healthy :) During the lunch Kirsty noticed who she thought was Anthony Michael Hall, former child star turned producer and Dead zone actor. She wasnt sure but when I took a look I confirmed it was him – so she went and said hi – he was nice and asked her where she was from -so that was pretty cool. For those who don’t know what he looks like i’ll include a photo from Breakfast Club (1985) and a modern one.

After brunch we headed into the Radio City Hall to pick up the tickets for the Radio City Christmas Spectcular featuring the Rockettes, which was for 4:30pm – the rain was falling today but at least it wasn’t as cold around 9 degrees C ;)

The Rockettes Show was pretty amazing and included a full nativity display including 2 Camels and 1 donkey, as well as 12 other musical numbers, we had really good seats , I was impressed !

For Dinner we went to the restaurant in the hotel, I had the fish and chips, i was disapointed with the meal after the great NZ fish and chips we get normally. Kirsty had the roasted chicken – and we had ice cream for desert.

I then spoke to Nick and Phiny on skype. Well tomorrow is christmas and Santa flies in tonight – dont think hes bringing anything for me though – We are having christmas lunch in an Irish Restaurant/Bar so that should be good ;)
